I don't think you're fetishizing the gun in that icon. And the show kept them in character, though I cringed a little at the ultimate message, because shooting someone, no matter that he's a serial killer about to kill your friend, should have after effects. Big ones. And yes, John's a vet, but I know a TON of vets who still have trouble with what they did. Even the adrenaline junkies. Even the ones with a slight death wish. No matter what your interpretation of John. I like to believe that the part where he freaks out was just cut for time.
